Nicole is featured on the cover of the December 2016/January 2017 issue of Town and Country Magazine.

There’s a moment in the new film Lion when you can actually see a mother’s heart swell with love for her son. He has come to his adoptive mother to explain why he needs to find the woman who gave birth to him, and he’s worried she won’t understand. In the same moment you also watch her heart cracking just a tiny bit because of all that he doesn’t comprehend: that’s there nothing she wouldn’t do for his happiness. It’s a breathtaking reveal—seeing a woman’s complex emotions battling for dominance—and also worth noting as the moment when Nicole Kidman manages to once again disappear completely into a character.

“As I was filming her in this scene I forgot where I was,” says Garth Davis, the movie’s director. “I was completely transported.” Dev Patel, who plays the son, says he was so enthralled by his co-star he almost forgot he had his own lines to deliver. “I was mesmerized,” he says. “I was literally just feeding off her energy and what she was saying. She was so in her skin. She was acting from the gut—you could feel it. It was an honor to be in the room with her.”

Here’s the funny thing about Nicole Kidman: She has the soul of a character actress but it happens to be housed in the body of a movie star. Close your eyes and think of her, and what comes to mind is a tower of flame-haired elegance on a red carpet, but she’s also the chameleon who transformed into Virginia Woolf in The Hours, a sociopathic newscaster in To Die For, and a mother shattered by grief in Rabbit Hole. “I see so many people, media included, focused on her beauty,” says Davis. “Some are even blinded by it. For me, I get swept up in her ability to play anything without losing her down-to-earth quality.”

Despite her glamour, and the fact that she has been a magnet for public speculation for nearly three decades, it’s clear Kidman has made conscious choices to stay grounded. For example, she lives in Nashville, not Los Angeles or New York, with her husband of 10 years, country star Keith Urban, and their two young daughters, eight-year-old Sunday (“Sunny”) and five-year-old Faith (“Fifi”).

She tends to favor small, interesting, independent movies over big studio productions. When Town & Country caught up with her it was on set in Ohio for The Killing of a Sacred Deer, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster) and co-starring Colin Farrell. “It’s a very low-budget film—shoestring, really,” Kidman says cheerfully. “But don’t worry, you don’t see the deer killed.” (Another pleasant surprise about Kidman: She’s really funny.)

When asked how she’s picking projects these days—because trying to find a pattern in her acting choices is a brain-breaking business—she laughs. “I call myself the wild card,” she says, “because I have no idea what it is. I’m so spontaneous—sometimes to my detriment and sometimes my benefit—but it’s how I’ve always been. My husband never knows what I’m going to choose. And then he’ll ask me to explain why and I can’t!”

InStyle hosted their second annual InStyle Awards at The Getty Center in Los Angeles on Monday evening, an intimate dinner hosted by newly appointed Editor-in-Chief Laura Brown that was meant to honor the actors, actresses and artists whose style has helped shape the red carpet as we know it, as well as those behind the scenes who help make them look so effortlessly glamorous. The evening was full of big names, both from Hollywood and the runways of Paris, who all gathered together to honor Nicole Kidman, Tom Ford, Priyanka Chopra, Shailene Woodley, Leon Bridges, hairstylist Danilo, makeup artist Sir John, and stylist Leslie Fremar

Honorees Kidman said it was “really sweet” to be celebrated as InStyle‘s Style Icon, but her at-home critics weren’t as impressed: “My kids were like, ‘Where are you going?’ I said, ‘To get a style award.’ They were like, ‘What?’” she joked to People. After all, they are their mom’s most valuable style weapons — when asked if she gives them style advice, Kidman said, “No! They give me it.”

The Oscar winner admitted she’s come a long way from her early days: “My mom made all my clothes when I was a little girl and then when I got bigger I suddenly had people like Lagerfeld and Tom Ford and Alexander McQueen and Galliano making clothes for me and I get to wear those extraordinary things. It’s kind of amazing. That’s like fairytale stuff right?” (It definitely sounds like a dream to us.) And he style has certainly improved from those early days, she says: “It was a train wreck when I was 10, 11, 12…But I was really into chill skirts and ankle boots and all that sort of stuff. So I think I’ve just evolved as I’ve grown up. And now I probably have a far more, I would say, classical style with a bit of a twist.”

Nicole spoke with ET on the red carpet of last night’s InStyle Awards.

Nicole Kidman has been a style icon for as long as we can remember, and the second annual InStyle Awards on Monday night in Los Angeles was no exception.

The statuesque actress stunned in a sexy pink-and-black Versace gown featuring a thigh-high slit, and paired it with gorgeous black T-strap pumps. Her elegant updo and a diamond bracelet completed the high fashion look.

ET spoke with the Australian star at the event — where she was fittingly honored with the Style Icon Award — and she revealed her favorite red carpet looks of all time.

“I think I like the Dior… you know, the chartreuse that I wore,” she tells ET’s Nischelle Turner, referring to the iconic brightly-colored John Galliano for Christian Dior satin gown she donned at the Oscars in 1997.

“There was another beautiful gold Dior that no one comments on but was probably one of my favorites,” she adds, also shouting out her bold look at the Oscars in 2000. “And I got to wear, like, the most beautiful 24-carat gold antique gloves that I still own — fingerless gloves. There’s just different things. I mean, so much of it for me is the combination of jewelry and dresses and the way it’s all put together.”

Kidman, 49, says her sense of style comes from her mother, who actually made her clothes growing up.

“I think because I grew up with a mother who could sew, she would make all my clothes for me ever since I was little,” she reveals. “So I was able to think things up and tear stuff out of magazines when I got to be a teenager, and she would make them for my sister and I. So, our prom dresses, my mom made.”

“I think that’s probably why I love clothes so much because I watch them… and really, I love couture because of that — because I know what it takes to make things, and the mastery in a couture dress takes my breath away — still takes my breath away,” she notes.

Kidman was accompanied inside by her husband, Keith Urban, who she gushed was racing to the event to join her after performing on Jimmy Kimmel Live!. Kidman shares that she and her two daughters with Urban — 8-year-old Sunday and 5-year-old Faith — are planning a quiet celebration to mark his 49th birthday on Wednesday.

“He said, ‘I want nothing big. I just want the four of us together,'” she explains. “But, we’ve organized things. We’ve got stuff. The girls and I have planned it. … I think when you’re just a really close family, the last thing you want to do is go out and have some big party. He just wants to be surrounded by his girls so that’s what he’s getting.”

Kidman and Urban celebrated their 10-year wedding anniversary in June, and clearly, appear more in love than ever.
