Nicole spoke with ET on the red carpet of last night’s InStyle Awards.
Nicole Kidman has been a style icon for as long as we can remember, and the second annual InStyle Awards on Monday night in Los Angeles was no exception.
The statuesque actress stunned in a sexy pink-and-black Versace gown featuring a thigh-high slit, and paired it with gorgeous black T-strap pumps. Her elegant updo and a diamond bracelet completed the high fashion look.
ET spoke with the Australian star at the event — where she was fittingly honored with the Style Icon Award — and she revealed her favorite red carpet looks of all time.
“I think I like the Dior… you know, the chartreuse that I wore,” she tells ET’s Nischelle Turner, referring to the iconic brightly-colored John Galliano for Christian Dior satin gown she donned at the Oscars in 1997.
“There was another beautiful gold Dior that no one comments on but was probably one of my favorites,” she adds, also shouting out her bold look at the Oscars in 2000. “And I got to wear, like, the most beautiful 24-carat gold antique gloves that I still own — fingerless gloves. There’s just different things. I mean, so much of it for me is the combination of jewelry and dresses and the way it’s all put together.”
Kidman, 49, says her sense of style comes from her mother, who actually made her clothes growing up.
“I think because I grew up with a mother who could sew, she would make all my clothes for me ever since I was little,” she reveals. “So I was able to think things up and tear stuff out of magazines when I got to be a teenager, and she would make them for my sister and I. So, our prom dresses, my mom made.”
“I think that’s probably why I love clothes so much because I watch them… and really, I love couture because of that — because I know what it takes to make things, and the mastery in a couture dress takes my breath away — still takes my breath away,” she notes.
Kidman was accompanied inside by her husband, Keith Urban, who she gushed was racing to the event to join her after performing on Jimmy Kimmel Live!. Kidman shares that she and her two daughters with Urban — 8-year-old Sunday and 5-year-old Faith — are planning a quiet celebration to mark his 49th birthday on Wednesday.
“He said, ‘I want nothing big. I just want the four of us together,'” she explains. “But, we’ve organized things. We’ve got stuff. The girls and I have planned it. … I think when you’re just a really close family, the last thing you want to do is go out and have some big party. He just wants to be surrounded by his girls so that’s what he’s getting.”
Kidman and Urban celebrated their 10-year wedding anniversary in June, and clearly, appear more in love than ever.

Nicole talked with the Daily Mail about raising her daughters with Keith Urban.
The actress has two young daughters, Sunday Rose, eight, and Faith, five, with husband Keith Urban, as well as an adult son and daughter with Tom Cruise
Nicole Kidman stole the show in a stunning leg-bombing black dress tonight, as she led famous faces at her Lion premiere in London.
And the star, 49, flashed a huge smile as she met fans, before opening up about the dread she feels about her youngest children growing up.
The Oscar-winning actress has two young daughters, Sunday Rose, eight, and Faith, five, with husband Keith Urban, as well as an adult son and daughter with Tom Cruise.
Arriving at the BFI London Film Festival to promote her movie, in which she plays the adoptive mother of a young boy from India, she told the Press Association: “My maternal instincts are very strong.
“I’m raising two little girls right now and I have two adult children, but Keith, my husband, always says ‘you’re so maternal’, which I take as a compliment, but I will be sad when there is not a five-year-old in the house.
“I think of that. But at least my sister has some under-5s so I still get a little bit of that.”
Lion tells the true story of Saroo Brierley, a little boy from a rural township in India who fell asleep on a train carriage and was trapped on board when it departed, taking him hundreds of miles from home.
After ending up in an orphanage, he was adopted by an Australian couple until he became haunted by lucid memories of his past and uses Google Earth to search for his family in India.
Nicole, who plays Sue Brierley, said: “It’s a true story, it actually happened and I found it incredible that he could go, through memory and Google Earth, to find his birth mother.
“The idea of the destiny of a child was very powerful to me.”
The adult Saroo is played by Slumdog Millionaire star Dev Patel, whom Kidman was quick to lavish praise on.
She said: “He’s delightful and funny and down to earth and a good catch! I don’t know if he has a girl but he’s a good catch.”
Patel, who first found fame on TV show Skins, said this was the role he related to the most in his career.
He told the Press Association: “I really discovered India when I shot Slumdog and I went there with Danny Boyle and this is a boy who was born in India but grew up in Australia and had to go back and rediscover it in search of his mother, so I related to that in a big way, it’s a modern role for me.
“There is a young child playing the younger Saroo and when I step into it it’s a metropolitan young film and I could relate to a lot of that.”
Patel, who has made a large number of films in India since the Oscar-winning Slumdog – including The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel films and the upcoming dramatisation of the Mumbai terror attacks – added: “It’s important to breathe life into stories, it’s about making film-making more diverse… and I’m in a very privileged position that I can go there and make films on an international scale.”

InStyle.com gives us a beautiful rundown of Nicole’s style from last night’s appearance at the Mill Valley Film Festival.
While most of us turn to our off-duty staples on Sunday, Nicole Kidman uses the weekend as another opportunity to prove just how glamorous she can be.
The 49-year-old Oscar winner did just that as she arrived at the 39th Mill Valley Film Festival in San Rafael, Calif., in a gorgeous off-white dress that screamed movie star. Making it look nothing but effortless, Kidman slipped into a fresh-off-the-runway spring-summer 2017 Rodarte frock with sheer mesh paneling, a blush-toned under layer, and an ornate embellished design. The dress featured a cape-like, billowing design that added an ethereal touch.
As for her accessories, she styled the look with radiant pieces like metallic heels, a bronze-toned rectangular clutch, and 19th century pearl and diamond Fred Leighton earrings. And while Kidman doesn’t make red carpet appearances too often, they never fail to be outstanding. She recently wowed in a velvet long-sleeve dress at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival.
